Tap (or speak) to call.

To make a call on iPhone, tap a name or number. That’s it. You can tap to call from just about anywhere: a name in your contacts list, a number on a website or text message, even a phone number on a map listing. Voice Control lets you speak a name or number to make a call. And you can switch between calls, merge calls, or add up to five callers with a tap.

Hear and be heard, even in loud places.

Making a call at the ballpark, in the airport, or on a crowded bus can be frustrating, if not downright impossible. But not with iPhone 4. It includes a microphone built into its top edge and uses sophisticated audio technology to suppress unwanted background noise. The technology works on everything from crowd noise and engine sounds to music and loud conversation — even just a few feet away. So the person you’re talking to can hear what you’re saying, not what you’re hearing.

Talk face to face.

Sometimes you want to see who you’re talking to rather than just hear them. With FaceTime, iPhone 4 lets you do exactly that. Just tap the FaceTime button from a Contact or a phone call to turn your conversation into a live video call with another iPhone 4 user over Wi-Fi. Then you can share a smile or wave hello with friends and family, even when you’re thousands of miles apart. No other phone makes staying in touch this much fun.

See your voicemail.

Visual Voicemail on iPhone is still the biggest breakthrough in voicemail since, well, voicemail. It lets you view all the messages you’ve received and select the one you want to hear first — just like email. So instead of listening to messages in the order they were received, you can go directly to the messages that are most important to you. To return a call, just tap the Call Back button.

Do more with your contacts.

The Contacts app on iPhone is more than just a list of names and numbers. Tap a contact’s address and iPhone opens Maps so you can get directions. Add photos to your contacts and see your friends’ faces when they call. Scroll through names with a flick, or search to find someone fast. And sync all your contacts by connecting your iPhone to your Mac or PC, or wirelessly via MobileMe, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, and CardDAV-compliant servers.

Search across your iPhone.

Need a phone number in a hurry? Want to hear a song right now? With Search, everything on your iPhone is just a few taps away. On the main Home screen, flick your finger to the right, then type what you’re looking for in the search field. Search looks through everything on your iPhone — app names, contacts, calendars, songs, email and text messages, notes, and more. From there, a single tap takes you where you want to go.

Search the web.

You can search beyond iPhone to find what you need on the web and Wikipedia. On the Search screen, just type what you’re looking for and choose where you want to search. Safari automatically opens with a list of search results.

Search the server.

In Mail, you can search through all your downloaded messages by sender, recipient, or subject. But if the information you’re looking for isn’t stored on your iPhone, you can continue your search on the server.* Search responds with all the results. In the Contacts app, you can also search for people in your corporate directory if you use Microsoft Exchange or LDAP.

Search inside applications.

Searching on iPhone works in other apps too. Search text and names in MMS messages. Search names and notes in Contacts. Search calendar events by subject, location, attendees, or notes. Search all text in Notes. Search for albums, artists, or songs in the iPod app.

Engineered glass

All the breakthrough technology in iPhone 4 is situated between two glossy panels of aluminosilicate glass — the same type of glass used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains. Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, the glass is ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever. It’s also recyclable.

Retina display

The 960-by-640 backlit LCD display boasts a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, making it the highest-resolution phone screen ever. To achieve this, Apple engineers developed pixels so small — a mere 78 micrometers across — that the human eye can’t distinguish individual pixels. That makes text remarkably sharp and graphics incredibly vivid. IPS technology also provides excellent color and contrast from almost any viewing angle.

Stainless steel band

Created from our own alloy, then forged to be five times stronger than standard steel, the CNC-machined band is the mounting point for all the components of iPhone 4. The band provides impressive structural rigidity and allows for its incredibly thin, refined design. It also functions as both iPhone 4 antennas.

Multi – touch

With its large Multi-Touch display and innovative software, iPhone lets you control everything using just your fingers. How does it work? A panel laminated on the glass senses your touch using electrical fields. It can register multiple touches at once to support advanced gestures such as pinch to zoom, two-finger tap, and more. The panel then transmits the information to the Retina display below it.
